The last in the series of ‘Wisdom from a Cactus’ is titled:
Accentuate Your Strong Points.
In 1992 a book was published that expressed a life and business philosophy that at the time was a bit controversial. Authors Donald O Clifton and Paula Nelson penned the philosophy based on over forty years of research with successful American companies, that to achieve the absolute best, a company or an individual should focus on its/his/her strengths and steer away from weakness (Soar with Your Strengths).
It is indeed a fascinating philosophy…do more of what you are good at doing, and less of what you are not good at.
The suggestions is to manage your weakness, ultimately making them non-existent or irrelevant. Work on your strengths to make them even stronger.
One of the chapters highlights this concept: Strengths develop best in the framework of mission. Goals die, but mission lives on.
This meshes beautifully with what I have been learning about the importance of identifying and embracing our purpose, which provides us with the passion to carry on every day.
If you are soaring with your strengths, you are liking what you are doing. When you like what you are doing, you’ll do ‘it’ more, and get even better at doing ‘it.’ If you can make a living at ‘it,’ you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
I encourage you to take some time and discover what your own strengths are. There are a number of questions you can ask to get started. Let me know if you’d like to explore these ideas further.
