The temperatures are dropping, even here in Arizona. We can even sleep with our windows open.
Pumpkins are everywhere! Here in our community in the foothills, javelinas have been seen nosing pumpkins from neighbors’ front porches down the street to a ‘happy eating place.’ Fall has definitely arrived!
All that adds up to the reality that the holiday season is just around the corner!! Halloween seems to usher in the change in everyone’s focus from the mundane to the next party- and October 31st is just a few days away.
The Emotional Response to the Holidays
For some reading this, the holidays trigger emotions of family celebration and much joy. For others, those emotions surrounding family celebrations are mixed with dread. The average person gains 14-17 pounds! No wonder there are so many people who hide from the camera and seem to always be absent from family photos! A friend of mine said that he hasn’t been in family photos for the past 10 years. His excuse is that he has had to take the photos…however with all the camera features available today, a simple timed setting allows everyone to be in the photo!!
Practical Tips for Approaching Your Holiday Gatherings
With the approaching holidays, I wanted to provide some practical tips on HOW to approach each holiday gathering or event.
- Pre-party/event: Never arrive hungry. Consider eating small frequent meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism/blood sugar more stable.
- At the party/event: Scope out the entire buffet table, including the desserts, before you choose anything. Use a smaller plate and have only a ‘single-story’ of food!
- After the party/event: Get into an activity mode as quickly as possible: walk during your lunch hour; park further away from your entrance to the office or mall; get a device to track your daily steps, and go for 10,000!
