Are you looking at the calendar blankly because you realize it is November…and there are only two months left of 2017…and you are no where near where you wanted to be at the end of 2017?
You’ve got to make a decision- and a commitment…
And quit staring at the slide (You need to read about Max and how you can apply his learning process to a skill or habit or action that you need to do NOW!!)
Step 4. Take some action to start the process. Remember that Max headed for the slide! He took steps in the right direction. I read an article recently (sorry, I didn’t jot down the source…) that encouraged the reader to ask three simple questions when making a new habit:
- Can I?
- Will I?
- When will I? NOW!
Step 5. After you get started, take a few minutes and look at the options for the next step and MAKE A MOVE. It is good to know where you are going next. However, the temptation for some of us (depending on our personality) is to overanalyze, and then actually experience ‘paralysis by analysis.’ For some, there is a need to address the most minuscule detail of the process, and the result is that you never make the next move! For this person, ‘what if…’ crowds your brain so much that you cannot do anything! Is that you?
My business mentor, Phil, and I actually had a conversation about analysts this week. My more recent actions tell me that I am on the path of an entrepreneur- someone who is willing to move forward and take risks- rather than stay an employee- who typically is not encouraged to be a creative problem solver!
I have a confession to make: I have found that it’s a lot more fun to move forward, and it’s not as scary as you think it will be. I’ve learned that it’s OK to not be perfect. It’s OK to have to re-think an action and come up with a better plan. It usually turns out- better!
So I encourage you to go for it!! Yes, make your move!
By the way, if you are a frustrated creative problem solver in your current job situation, you may be more entrepreneurial than you think. Give me a call (480.382.8255)- even if you are an analyst- and let’s talk about what you’d rather be doing.
Step 6. Repeat!
Yes, this is the famous word that a marketer added to the shampoo instructions that increased sales (well, that’s the story I heard a long time ago!): Repeat. Do it again, and again, and again. Done is better than perfect!
Step 7. Do the action/habit/skill with your coach.
Now we know that the best results don’t simply come with practice, but with perfect practice- and that happens when you submit (now that’s a tough word today!) to the input from a coach or an accountability partner. In our business, presentations and calls are initially done with your mentor right there with you after you have watched him/her do the action several times. Then it’s time for step 8.
Step 8. Do the action/skill/habit by yourself and prepare to be amazed!
When you watch a professional, and when you are watched and coached by a professional, you are actually saving time in the learning process. Prepare to be amazed! You can do this…
What do you want to learn to do (better)? Or what can you do NOW to move toward your 2017 goals?
There is still time. Don’t throw in the towel on 2017. In fact, you might visualize running up to the starting line of 2018 by getting into action right now!!
If you’re looking for a coach or an accountability partner, give me a call, 480.382.8255, and let’s schedule some time together.
