Leadership is a fascinating topic in business as well as in life. Books, blogs, seminars, webinars and articles by famous and not-so famous leaders can give food for thought to anyone who is in a leadership position.
To further describe leadership on a practical level: if you have influence over even one person, you are a leader. A mother, father, grandparent, business owner, team leader, project manager- are all leaders. A good starting question might be, where are you leading those who are following you? Are you in fact just going along with the normal crowd? Or is there a possibility that you are thinking differently?
This morning I received a link to a blog post from the Harvard Business Review. The opening paragraph includes this thought:
…real leaders are happy to zig while others zag. They understand that in an era of hyper-competition and non-stop disruption, the only way to stand out from the crowd is to stand for something special.

Mannatech, the nutritional research and development company with whom I have partnered exclusively for the past 15 years, is separating itself from other nutritional companies Labor Day week-end in Branson, MO. Mannatech is literally planting its flag on the Social Entrepreneur mountain with the public launch of its M5M project: connecting 5 million consumers of our Real Food Technology products with 5 million kids suffering from malnutrition.

The Give for Real Program was instituted in July, 2010 and the reports from caregivers in a variety of countries have encouraged all of us in the program to dream really big. Watch a recent video which captured a visit by Dr. Rob Sinnott, Mannatech’s CEO, Chief Science Officer, husband and father of three young boys. I add the last two descriptors to let you know that this trip affected his family.
You are leading someone. Where are you going? Are you involved in something bigger than yourself which provides purpose, significance, and direction for you and those you are leading? My observation: having purpose that directs your life is not the norm. If you are involved in something bigger than yourself, be prepared to be zigging when others are zagging!
If you’re still looking for the bigger purpose to your life, I encourage you to check out this link. Mannatech’s venture into the social entrepreneur arena is unique because not only have we identified a social problem for which we have a solution, we have a revenue-sharing method of incentivizing those who would join us to champion our cause.
