Exercise is not a word that most people like to hear. It conjures up visions of traveling to a gym, changing clothes, sweating, sore muscles, changing clothes, traveling home, and more sore muscles.
There are alternatives, though, and on our recent vacation in Cabo, daily situations reminded me that we always have a choice.
Whenever we left our room, we had to make a decision about how we were going to get to our destination, whether it was the beach, the pool, a restaurant…you get the idea. Once we were in the buildings, we also had choices.
Choices Throughout the Day
Choices that you make throughout the day may not necessarily add up to 30 minutes, but they will add some movement to your day. The recommendation from the CDC is that you achieve about 10,000 clicks a day. Choosing the stairs over the elevator (or the stairs over the cart) is one way to add clicks!
Benefits of Good Choices
The benefits can add up quickly: that small decision to move can trigger the release of some ‘feel-good brain chemicals’ that counteract the stress chemicals. My trainer friend Dr. Mark Sherwood wrote about the effects of a walk to cool off: there is a calming of your emotions, a decrease of your intensity, an unclogging of your mind, and a return to a sense of sanity. (Check out his entire blog post here)
When you choose to take the stairs instead of the elevator, or even the escalator, you are conscious that you’ve made a better choice, which makes you feel better about yourself, which could trigger another good decision….and you could have a great day!
