The question from our previous post was this:
Does it really matter what I eat now? How does the whole food-thing fit into longevity? And it’s summer…so can’t I just take some time off from having to think about healthy living choices?
Let’s go back to looking at the next characteristic of centenarians and food. It is simply this:
Eat a mostly vegetarian Mediterranean Diet with Coffee/Tea.
Characteristics of a Mediterranean Diet
The studies indicated that the lifestyle habits listed previously were common in those who were older and kept their weight off. Remember, most centenarians have never been obese. Additionally, “across all studies, centenarians typically eat a largely plant-based diet and eat red meat only occasionally” (p. 102).
The Mediterranean Diet is usually described as:
- high in calories from whole grains, fruits and vegetables
- medium in calories from nuts, beans, peas, fish, poultry and eggs
- low in calories from saturated fat dairy products, red meat and refined carbohydrates.(p. 103)
“The famed heart surgeon Michael DeBakey once remarked the “Anything white will kill you”… referring to “refined carbohydrates with high glycemic indexes such as table sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, white flour, white potatoes, white rice and white pasta.” (p. 106)
The studies identified a number of superfoods- foods that definitely impact health and longevity. This link for a popular women’s magazine has photos of 52 superfoods! Certainly almost anyone can find a few to add to their meals! Bottom line: “eating lots of fruits and vegetables extends life expectancy and lowers the risk of many age-related diseases.” (p.107)
